A Brief Affair with Infinity follows the story of a young Mathematics student who falls passionately in love with a married man. Pursuing studies into the concepts of infinity, the nameless protagonist begins to discover uncanny parallels between her research findings and her forbidden love affair. What is the square root of two lovers? Are all movements and journeys an illusion? How does one contain the all-consuming nature of infinity or desire? Blending aspects of Greek mythology, philosophical paradoxes, literary metaphors and stream-of-consciousness revelations, A Brief Affair with Infinity takes audiences on a stunningly intense journey of distraught love and piercing inquisitions.

Biography

Jocelyn Chua’s A Brief Affair with Infinity was long-listed for the National Arts Council Golden Point Award 2005. She was also placed second on Singapore Young Dramatist Award 2002 for her play The Hungry Cuckoo,  as well as in the 24 Hour Playwriting Competition 2003 for her play Home & Station. Jocelyn also developed a two-hander script entitled The Fish Bowl under the TheatreWorks WritersLab program 2003. She then became a TheatreWorks commissioned playwright in 2004 where she wrote the one act play Restless.

Three of the abovementioned stage plays have been published in her recent book entitled Restless and Other Plays.

Jocelyn directed her script Home & Station at the Substation Guinness Theatre under the Fun Stage Fringe in February 2005. She also worked on a student short film entitled Serum City, completed in March 2006, in which she had written and directed the original screenplay.

Besides having performed three of local playwright Verena Tay’s monologues in the Substation production of 3 Men Meet 3 Women in July 2004, Jocelyn also took on the role of Yishi in the Fun Stage production of the Mandarin play Loverswords. It was held in Kunming City, Yunnan, China under the 5th Chinese Drama Festival in September 2004. Jocelyn was last seen in the leading role of Binny in The Ultimate Commodity presented by NTU’s Interaction and Entertainment Research Center as part of the Esplanade’s Sparks 4 programme in September 2006.

What media says,

“Readers will not be disappointed, as [Jocelyn’s] plays, which have all been performed before, contain a keenness of observation and understanding of subtext that belie her young age.”

* Stephanie Yap, The Sunday Times, Read - New Arrivals, 3 December 2006

“While the spunky 21-year-old has had barely two years of experience in the local theatre, she has chalked up a considerable portfolio to date. With her animated gestures and outgoing personality, [Jocelyn] is every bit the bona fide theatre actress. Her love for theatre is obvious…”

* Carolyn Quek, The Business Times, Campus Life, 18 October 2004

“Good Girls Don’t Wait, performed by Jocelyn Chua… showed the playwright’s [Verena Tay] skill at using a simple situation to hint at something much bigger…Tay paces the monologue well, as does actress Chua, who switches between the different voices in the piece without hamming it up.”

* Clarissa Oon, The Straits Times, Life! ARTS on Monday, 26 July 2004
