Marudhy,  A classical solo Indian dance performance by Priyalatha Arun

Synopsis

A wondrous show of the art of Bharata Natyam. What you will see is the traditional art as it was meant to be; there will be no experimentation here, no tampering with the conventions. Indeed you will see Bharata Natyam as it might have been performed in the motherland two millennia ago.

This is appropriate. For the tale that will unfold before you is at least 2000 years old. And what a tale it is … rendered as a minor epic poem in Tamil by the poet Kannadasan, this is a story of love and betrayal, of soldiers and warriors, of Kings and princes and dancing maidens, of assignations in moonless nights and the bloody clamour of the battlefield.

Two young maidens - Marudhy and Aadhimandhi - both beautiful beyond words, fall in love with one man, Aartan - their dance teacher, a prince and warrior. But, as you will soon learn, Aartan is no ordinary dance teacher. He takes the hand of Aadhimandhi in marriage and betrays Marudhy. Heartbroken, Marudhy renounces the world and retires to a nunnery. But the fates have decreed that there will be one more meeting between Aartan and Marudhy, a meeting that will change both their lives for all time to come.

Between Woman and Man
The Erasure of Verena Tay

In collaboration with The Substation’s Associate Artist Scheme

A project between Verena Tay and Richard Chua exploring female-male energies through storytelling, movement and sound.

1)    Male Instincts (20 April 2007, 8pm)
2)    Women Wise (21 April 2007, 8pm)

(60 minutes with no intermission)

The Guinness Theatre
The Substation
45 Armenian Street,
Singapore 179936

Directed by: Richard Chua
Production design by: Fiona Lin

Verena Tay is doubtful whether she is actually a man or a woman. She looks supposedly like a woman – since she is biologically one – but she behaves like a man, or, to put it simply, she has the character of a man. She is obviously very frustrated. She asked Richard Chua if there he would be interested to see Verena as a man. He decides to erase her off…
